Kingdom Reflections
God of Covenants
By Jos, 01.11.2024
God is a God of covenants*
After the flood, God made a covenant with Noah, his sons and every living creature. (Gen 9:8-17)
God made a covenant with Abraham, that through him, all the families of the earth shall be blessed. (Gen 12:1-3 & Gen 15)
God made a covenant with the people of Israel at mount Sinai. He called the people his people, and if they obeyed his commandments they would be blessed, and be a blessing for all peoples. (Deut 30:15-20)
God made a covenant with king David, that once a son of David would sit on the throne of an everlasting Kingdom and that that Kingdom would be a blessing for all kingdoms. (1 Sam. 7:1-16)
But… the people of Israel didn’t keep their side of the covenants, they kept breaking them and hope of their being a blessing to all the earth seemed far away.
Until God made a new covenant with the people of Israel, a covenant different than any of those before it. God promised to write the law on the people’s hearts, and God would no longer dwell among the people, but within them. (Jeremiah 31:31-34)
God sent his only son, who became part of his creation. He was limited, gifted and entered a broken world.
We can see how all the covenants were fulfilled in Jesus,
Jesus became a creature and redeemed all creatures. (Colossians 1:15-20)
Jesus is in the family of Abraham. (Matthew 1:1)
Jesus is the true Isralite who kept God’s commandments. (Hebrews 4:15)
Jesus is the son of David and he will sit on the throne of an everlasting Kingdom. (Matthew 1:1)
Jesus is the one who fulfilled all the covenants, and so, in accordance with the covenant in Jeremiah, God doesn’t dwell among us anymore, we no longer have to go to the temple, to worship God in the place where he dwells. Instead, he dwells in us – we have become mini mobile temples, spreading God’s blessings in our families, among our people and throughout all the kingdoms of the earth.
